Coming in 2022 - Get Started in Adventure Programs
We are super excited to announce that in 2022, we will be running a pilot of "Get Started in Adventure" programs for people entirely new to the group, or who have only attended a couple of hikes.
Each program will run for 8-10 weeks, for 6-12 participants, and will include 3 hikes, 1 non-hike adventure, 3-4 zoom education sessions, and will culminate in a camping weekend. Each 8-10 week program will be facilitated by a single leader, who will stay with the group for all of the events for the duration of the program. Locations are to be confirmed, but there will be a good spread across our main areas in Melbourne, Geelong, Gippsland, as well as in Canberra, with more to be added. The aim is for each group to learn together, to support each other, and form adventure buddy connections that can continue well past the end of the program.
Programs will start in February, and operate throughout the year. Further info, including dates, prices and locations, will be available towards the end of December, so keep an eye out.
Why have we decided to do this?
Currently when a new person attends a hike, they manage to overcome the anxieties to get them along to their first one, amongst a group of strangers. Will I fit in? Will I be too slow? Will anyone like me? What if theres no one to talk to? They complete their first walk, and book in for another one.
But theres a very good chance that the 2nd hike is a different leader, and an entirely new group of strangers. Its daunting and intimidating, and often people can feel a lack of connection which may mean they are less likely to return.
When EYCZ first started, as the only leader, I could connect with participants personally, and educate and allay fears, and make people feel comfortable on an ongoing basis. I'd notice if people dropped off, and could get them back.
Back then, participants really got to know each other, and developed strong baseline relationships, and became their own crew, supporting each other. Fast forward years later and many of these core participants are still friends, and still organising their own adventures separate to EYCZ.
These days participants are missing out on that deep connection, and possibility of lifelong adventure buddies. Add COVID to the mix, people are increasingly anxious on how to get started, so this program will help nurture that.

What if I am unable to attend one of the events in the Program?
To get the most out of the program, its ideal to attend all of the events. However, we understand that life happens, so its not a huge drama if you miss one of the adventure events. If you are unable to attend an online session, we can record it for you to view later.
What happens if I am unable to attend a significant amount of the program, due to illness or COVID related restrictions?
Due to the nature of this program, its in your best interests (and those in your group) to keep the same people in the same group for the whole program. In the event of illness, or COVID related restrictions, that keep you from completing the program, credits may be available to be used for other future EYCZ events/programs.
